PART 1

Sunrise on a London bound Easyjet flight… I haven’t seen the sun in weeks and it was snowing on the ground… Not a bad way to start the day! 30,000 feet, sunshine, blue skies and one of my all time favourite records.

I’m writing our blog post from an airplane because I finally have a few spare moments. It’s been busy. It’s been awesome. We’re totally loving hearing from all our new fans, friends & soon to be family (yeah, you ain’t just our customers you’re our freakin’ family)

Eating what i like to all ‘The Easyjet Business Breakfast’ it contains loads of sugar…

Anyway, what am I doing on my back to London again? Well, we’re having our photoshoot and it’s been a long road on this one… We’ve been working on this for months… It’s a little nerve wrecking but equally as exciting! I wasn’t that excited when I had to get up to go to the airport at 3 AM but that’s what ‘The Easyjet Business Breakfast’ is for.

It’s all been pretty surreal… We still can’t believe that the last 2 weeks have actually happened! it’s a great way to end our old range & start our new one… Don’t worry a few of our classics are coming with us.

I’ll hit you guys up with some previews of the new range next week but like it said in LOOK Magazine this week … Join the Terrible Movement.

Now, when I hear this song it reminds me of Modest Mouse, aint time crazy a thing, like that? A little time changes everything… Still, a pretty amazing record, right? Pretty cool that is was made in our lifetimes.

So, after our photoshoot, we found ourselves in a spiral of busy-ness – hopefully soon, you guys will see the results of that, we are really excited. But as you can see, we got our photoshoot done.

And we launched our new range. We know it’s a little ‘out there’ but fortune favours the brave, or so we heard, and you guys seem to be loving it and yes, before you ask, we are printing more!!!

We have to say 2013 has been one of the busiest and best years of all time for both of us here at TM. The year most certainly started with a great big bang when Dakota Fanning wore our tee in LA but nothing could prepare us for what was to follow… The asounding Bonnie Strange wore our Kiss Me Original Muscle Tee during Berlin Fashion Week and soon, there we were looking at our creations in Instyle Magazine, personally recommened by Bonnie as a ‘must have.’

AAAAAAAAAH!

It’s been months and months of 18-hour days and to finally see our creations in a real deal fashion magazine was, as Bonnie would say, The Shit!

Dang, don’t let any one tell you hard work doesn’t pay off, it most certainly does. AND HERE IS THE PROOF:

Late on Sunday night, we were just wrapping things up for the week when we started to get messages and emails and then we were getting tagged on Instagram… Some one mentioned Cara Delevingne, and our little hearts were racing… Maude, our dog and office manager, almost choked (this is an entirely true story) when we scrolled through our feed on Instgram and saw CARA DELEVINGNE, Model of The Year, Vogue Magazine’s Cover Girl, wearing our Kiss Me Original Muscle Tee at New York Fashion Week… AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Exciting times lie ahead with our new range just around the corner BUT we knew at once that all this hard work wouldn’t mean a thing without the support of all our customers and friends and families and especially our fans – you guys tagged us and told every one who didn’t know us to go find us and follow us. You send us cool pictures all the time and most importantly, you wore it first…

We love you. We thank you and we promise to keep it Limited Edition, Ethical and Original.

Rock n Roll is here to stay… Wise, wise words Mr Young.

It’s January already and another year has passed us by. Time to get a little reflective and sentimental and put on some old records. Hence the Neil Young, and hence the song choice.

We are super busy planning and designing our new range, listening to records and getting really excited for 2013. Our next range is going to be KILLER and we can’t wait for you guys to see it!

We are keeping things super fresh, but still all ethical & Limited Edition!

Anyway, I could go on about the new range ALL DAY but we have had an exciting couple of months over here so lets talk about that instead!

Here is what has been happening for us…

First of all, we are now OFFICIALLY & EXCLUSIVELY stocked in Berlin’s The Shit Shop. Yup, we are now a part of Bonnie Strange’s Anti Fashion Movement. BOOM! And we couldn’t be more proud!

Lovely Sally released their new ‘End of the World’ range and HELLO, a few of our Tees had a few little cameos in their photo-shoot! CHECK us out! And take a look at those AMAZING new leggings. If the world was going to end, I know I would like to be in some of those!

4/10 (Purely for Sigourney Weaver’s performance in the 1st act, otherwise it’s a 3/10)

This film doesn’t deserve any more than the $8 million it made at the box office otherwise studios and producers won’t learn to stop backing ‘short film buzz’ directors.

In the same way that sceptics and psychics choose to omit the evidence that does not support their agenda, Cortes chooses to omit the substance that would inhibit his segueing between increasingly absurd twists, resulting in a neither shocking, nor rewarding climax.

We’ll start this blog post with a story, mostly because we have been listening to ‘For what it’s worth’ on our TM playlist whilst we sewed all of our freshly printed tee’s all week:

It’s 1966 on the Sunset Strip, which had just become the most awesome place to hang. The local residents and police are freaked out and concerned about all the extreme fun being had, so 22.00 rolls round and the police start arresting and beating up the kids and well, whaddayaknow, riots break out. During these riots Stephen Stills et al got whisked up in their limo to escape. Inspired, Stills turns their manager, Ahmet Ertegun, who was in the limo and says ‘ Hey man, so do ya wanna hear this song I wrote, for what it’s worth?’ and he played him this song on his guitar. Later Stills said to Ertegun ‘Hey man, I really wanna use that song I played you for the album, but I don’t know what to call it,’ to which Ertegun replied, ‘But, hey man, you told me what its called, you said, “Do you wanna hear this song I wrote – For What It’s Worth?”‘ and that was that. How ‘For What It’s Worth’ got it’s name.

Pretty radical story. Thanks to AC for reminding me of it this week.

Anyway, besides all our travelling back to a better time in music, we finally finished screen printing some more of our sold out tee’s and then finally finished sewing them – so you can go get ‘em in our shop right this minute!

We are also working on making our packages even more extra special for the Festive Season and decided we would also make extra special Birthday packaging for you guys too whilst we were at it. So, we made some killer cards and we have some more ribbon and more tissue paper and we will be hand writing your messages in the cards and wrapping up your presents for no extra charge! And we will also do some vouchers and send those out for you too. Did we just make Christmas and future birthday presents super easy? We hope so!

This week we got to see our Beverly Kills Muscle Tee get all caught up with The Beatles and the beautiful, über original Masha Sedgwick, not once but twice! Ooh la la, see the results below:

And to top that all off, Nün, film director and fashion lover, posted some pictures of her rockin’ out in Bangkok in one of our tees! We love our customers, we totally think of them as part of the family, so keep those pictures coming so we can keep our Family Album up to date!

And what a way to end the week… T-shirts were requested by the very talented and extraordinary Fanning Sisters and so we sent them! We really couldn’t feel more honoured that they like our tees, seriously, those girls are spectacular and we really can’t thank them enough for their support! Can’t wait to see them in ‘em! Roll on Summer!

We are going to love and you leave you for now, yeah, it’s Sunday, a real deal day of rest in Berlin, but we need to package up the weekend orders so they are ready to get on their way to you guys first thing…

Super 8 Movie Review

To dismiss JJ Abrams’ homage to the better films of anyone’s childhood on the grounds of a slightly disappointing ending or some perhaps underdeveloped plot threads, is a disservice to what can make the collaborative process of filmmaking so beautiful; the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

As far as first acts go, Super 8 is perhaps as engaging as any film I have seen in the past few years. Likeability: check. Humour: check. Intrigue: check. Pace: check. What is so important about the films we cherish from our childhood is what we learn about storytelling. For instance, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) engages the imagination and accelerates to top gear, though what else could be expected of source material from one of literature’s greatest children’s storytellers?

Abrams draws from, his producer, Steven Spielberg’s master craftsmanship in facilitating a child’s “wildest dream” scenario. For many of my generation, E.T. is perhaps our first exposure to truly great storytelling. The comparisons between the two films are inevitable and understandable. But teaching children about storytelling is a difficult task and so it is a credit to Super 8 that the comparisons are forthcoming; some of the same spots are being hit.

Strong and very believable performances from the young cast, who talk over one another, argue pettily and find the cruelty that only youth knows whilst still channeling the rose-tinted “forever friends” relationships from my youth, invoke the nostalgia that engages me and the relevance that I suspect would engage my younger brother.

A scenario that seems to snowball at an almost comical rate does its best to stay faithful to the untarnished and receptive imagination of a child. It’s as fast-paced as it needs to be and, although a couple of plotlines end up as loose ends, they aren’t anything close to enough to detract from the fun of the film.

Whilst an adult viewer might recognise all-too-soon the second and third acts from their own filmic education, what’s important is that, for the generation that don’t, this film is sure to provide their very own “E.T. Moment.” That’s no mean feat, and for that reason, I can’t look at Super 8 as anything other than a great success.

Its still dark out, It’s 3.23am and I’m sitting on a train waiting to leave London, when I return again it’ll only be briefly and this won’t be the final destination, as it has been for me, for so long. This is the first time in over a decade that I will be laying my hat somewhere new – Dinosaur Jr. is quite the appropriate soundtrack. I have a lump in my throat, getting all sentimental and the rest – I think it’s maybe the hour though , not the action.

Well, this month has mostly been filled with boxes and goodbyes but we have quite a few wonderful hellos awaiting us on the other side:

1. CHEAPER shipping all over the world!

2. A Kick Ass Photoshoot and our new and recently launched range – CHECK OUT OUR SHOP!

3. Berlin – City of hope, City of History, City of Inspiration… on our doorstep!

4. SPACE! For the last 6 – 8 months we have been living in a sea of Tee’s – Berlin has more space! We can live peacefully, alongside the Tee’s instead of amongst them!

Check out our favourite girl band in the world- NOVELLA- they love a bit of TM and we LOVE a bit if Novella. Seriously, they have a lilac and leopard print record – make that your next vinyl purchase. It has been our inspiration for our new Tee’s – ‘You’re not that cool.’

In the short time we have been in Berlin we have already had a few visitors… FUN. came to town and well, what-da-ya-know… Check out (the very talented) Nate Harold in our new ‘Someone Gets To Date Kim’ Tee.

In other news, you’ve heard of the famous custom ‘Short Shorts’ Makers ‘Bambi & Manson?’ Well, our ‘Beverly Kills’ Muscle Tee found its way into their photo shoot for their new range ‘Lalaland.’ We couldn’t be more honoured!

And finally, before we forget, our Kiss Me Original Tee and our Brownies Tee are featured in the short Film ‘Veronika’ made in 48 hours by Ben Jay Crossman. Both worn by the lead actor! And if you haven’t heard of Veronika yet, that’s probably because you dont live in South Africa – Veronika’s street art can be seen in all kinds of interesting places, around SA, if you’re paying attention! That’s right, you saw correctly… We have been sailing and railing all over… With good reason!

As you may know, we’re taking Terrible Movement to Europe for a while! We think it’ll inspire us a little more and we do require a little space at the motel for all of our Tees… England ain’t the best spot for that thing we call ‘space.’

We have had LOTS of exciting news and seeing as we haven’t had time to write about it in the last few weeks – we’ll be doing that now!

So, we saw TM draw some rings around the world…

Our tees hit San Francisco and one of our favourite west coast American bloggers Hybrid Hunter showed us how to grunge up our KISS ME tee… WE LOVE THIS!

Why Hello!

Its been a lifetime since we last spoke! The reason? The Motel is officially moving! We are packing up our tees and going to Berlin! We will, of course, continue to make all our 100 % ethically made and hand printed tees here in London but the time has come to leave The Lane and move to the place that loves our tees the most! During this period, we may have a few days of down time and such but the wait will be worth it! Our new run will be back from the printers in the next 2 weeks and before we get on the Train-Ferry-Train–City Night Line to Berlin we will be working with some SUPER exciting and very talented people, here in London. We’ll give you a real introduction when we get down to it!

In the meantime, a lot of you guys have been having a real blast down at the Photoautomat and here are a couple of those entries…

We’ll be announcing a winner this very week!

Olympic fever finally took hold a couple of weeks ago when the Olympic Torch came by The Motel one Saturday! It was over a flash, but we saw it and we became really excited by it all!

Here is the moment the torch came by, carried by David Harris, pictured below, who raises loads of money for Charity every year and when we say loads, we mean millions! Dizzee Rascal was only a block away and suddenly we felt really proud to have so many great people from our little neighbourhood and it also feels good to be in the borough that will be hosting the games! AND then the games started and we have been watching sports we never even knew existed… truly caught up in all the excitement, suddenly, it all seems worth while.

Anyway, those are the highlights of our week last few weeks because outside of that, we have barely left The Motel in preparation for our next run! You’ll get to see them very soon! In the mean time, here is another picture of the wonderful Frida giving our Kiss Me Tee a new look.

Our design deadline was last week and that meant a REALLY busy weekend for us… that’s why you haven’t really heard from us till now…we have had to finalise all the last odds and ends to get ready for print and still have a few more odds to do this week but soon we will be watching over our new tees getting printed and all the lack of sleep and way too much ‘Bored to Death’ will have been worth it.
